HYPERHIDROSIS
(EXCESSIVE SWEATING)

Hyperhidrosis is the excessive abnormal sweating of the underarms, palms, soles, groin, under breasts or forehead. Hyperhidrosis affects 1-3% of the population and can significantly affect one’s self esteem and quality of life. Although the cause is not well understood, there is strong evidence pointing to aberrant sympathetic stimulation of the localized eccrine (sweat) glands. Sweat glands are innervated by autonomic nerves, which are stimulated by acetylcholine. Most therapies are based upon interrupting this stimulation. Genetics may play some role is this disorder.

Treatments offered include:
• Topicals such as aluminum chloride (first line choice) or glycopyrrolate
• Oral medications (off label)
• Botulinum toxin injections The area will be cleansed numbed with a topical anesthetic and/or ice and a series of roughly 20 injections per under arm will be spaced out. The treatment takes about 30 minutes and the treatment lasts up to 6 months.
